About This Word Counter
This Word Counter is a free writing utility for checking the length of essays, assignments, articles, emails and other text. The counts update as you type, so you can revise without repeatedly selecting your text or clicking a button.
The tool reports words, characters, characters excluding whitespace, sentences and paragraphs. It also gives estimated reading and speaking times. You can paste text or extract text from TXT, DOCX and text-based PDF documents. The results are estimates based on the text the browser can read; they may differ from a word processor, particularly for hyphenated terms, abbreviations and PDF layouts.
Our aim is to make basic writing checks quick and understandable, with the main tool available immediately and without an account.
Privacy and Document Handling
Text you type or paste is analyzed in your browser by the page's JavaScript. Document extraction for TXT, DOCX and text-based PDFs also runs in your browser. This site does not provide a server-side text-upload endpoint for those operations.
The site loads third-party services, including Google Analytics, Google AdSense, Infolinks and JavaScript libraries used to read documents. Those services may receive technical information such as your IP address and browser details according to their own policies. Avoid entering confidential material on any website unless you are comfortable with its privacy practices.
Clearing the text box removes the current text from the tool's interface. It does not control data collected separately by third-party services. You can review the privacy information of Google and Infolinks.
How to Count Words and Check a Document
- Type directly into the editor or paste a passage from another application.
- Watch the word, character, sentence and paragraph figures update automatically.
- Use the reading-time and speaking-time estimates to plan presentations or study sessions.
- For a document, choose a TXT, DOCX or PDF file. The extracted text appears in the editor so you can inspect what was counted.
- Use Copy Text to copy the current editor content, or Clear Text to start again.
PDF tip: A scanned PDF that contains only images may produce little or no text. This tool does not perform optical character recognition (OCR). Complex columns, tables, footnotes and headers can also affect the extracted reading order.
What Does the Word Counter Calculate?
The word counter analyzes your text and displays the total number of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs. It also estimates reading time and speaking time and shows the number of characters without spaces.
Understanding Word and Character Limits
Word limits and character limits measure different things. A 500-word assignment is usually judged by the number of words, whereas a 280-character field counts letters, punctuation, spaces and often line breaks. Always check whether a form counts spaces: this tool shows both the full character count and the count excluding whitespace.
How to shorten a draft without losing meaning
- Remove repeated points before changing individual words.
- Replace long introductions with a clear topic sentence.
- Cut phrases such as “in order to” when “to” expresses the same idea.
- Keep evidence, qualifications and citations required by the task.
- Recheck the count after each revision.
How to plan a writing target
For an 800-word draft, one practical starting plan is a 100-word introduction, 600 words for the main discussion and a 100-word conclusion. This is an example, not a universal rule: reports, essays, reflections and applications have different requirements. Leave room to edit rather than aiming for the maximum on the first draft.
How the Counts Work
Words: text separated by whitespace is counted as individual words. Characters: the full text length includes spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces: whitespace characters are excluded. Paragraphs: nonempty blocks separated by blank lines are counted. Sentences: the tool estimates boundaries from punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks, with some handling for common abbreviations and decimals.
These are useful everyday estimates, not linguistic or academic standards. For example, “well-known” may be one whitespace-delimited word here even if another application counts it differently. Sentence counts can be imperfect when text includes headings, initials, quotations or unusual punctuation.
Which count should I use?
Use the word count for an essay or article word limit; use characters including spaces for a form that specifies “characters”; and use the no-whitespace count only when a task explicitly excludes whitespace. If a university, publisher or application portal has its own counting policy, follow that policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this word counter free?
Yes. You can use the text editor and document extraction features without creating an account.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Programs use different rules for punctuation, contractions, hyphenated expressions, symbols and non-Latin scripts. This tool counts groups separated by whitespace as words. Check your institution's counting rules if a strict limit applies.
What counts as a paragraph?
The tool treats blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines as paragraphs. A single line break without a blank line does not start a new paragraph in this counter.
How are reading and speaking times calculated?
Reading time uses an estimated 225 words per minute; speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Actual speeds vary with the reader, topic and pauses.
Can I upload a scanned PDF?
You can select a PDF, but image-only scans usually have no extractable text. Convert the scan to searchable text with an OCR tool first.
Does the website store my text?
The counting and document-reading functions run in your browser rather than sending your text to a dedicated processing server. The website does load third-party analytics and advertising services; see the Privacy section for details.
